Massive 500-tonne load to close A47 for wind farm
24 Oct
Summary
- A 500-tonne abnormal load will close the A47 for the last wind farm transformer.
- The load is destined for the Orsted Onshore Converter Station in Swardeston.
- Hornsea Three wind farm will power over three million homes.
The A47 in Norfolk will be closed this Sunday, starting at 06:30 GMT, to accommodate the final 500-tonne transformer for the Hornsea Three offshore wind farm. This significant load is being transported from the Port of King's Lynn to the Orsted Onshore Converter Station located in Swardeston, near Norwich.
This marks the ninth and final transformer move since December. The transport, escorted by Norfolk Police, will proceed at a maximum speed of 10mph, necessitating the extended road closure throughout most of the day. Previous moves have occurred on Sundays to minimize traffic disruption.
Hornsea Three, situated 74 miles off the Norfolk coast, is projected to become the world's largest wind farm. It has the capacity to generate 2.9 gigawatts of energy, enough to power over three million homes. Permission for the project was granted in December 2021.
