Trees soaked in oil were also removed. The entire process cost National Highways and the Environment Agency over £500,000.
Officials from both agencies expressed strong disapproval of the illegal dumping, calling it an "appalling waste of taxpayers' money and our time." They stressed their commitment to investigating the incident and ensuring that those responsible are held accountable for the considerable expenses and environmental damage caused by their actions, invoking the "polluter pays" principle.
