81-Turbine Wind Farm Approved in Victoria, Powering 250,000 Homes
30 Aug
Summary
- 400MW wind farm approved in southwest Victoria
- Project to create 100 jobs during construction, 10 full-time roles
- Wind is largest contributor to Victoria's renewable energy generation
On August 28, 2025, the Victorian government approved the construction of a massive 400MW wind farm in southwest Victoria. The Mt Fyans wind farm project, which has been in the works for over a decade, will feature 81 turbines and is capable of generating enough electricity to power nearly 250,000 homes.
The wind farm's approval is a significant step forward in Victoria's renewable energy transition. Wind power currently accounts for more than a fifth of the state's monthly energy generation, and the government aims to source almost two-thirds of Victoria's electricity from renewables by 2030. The Mt Fyans project is expected to create 100 jobs during the construction phase, with 10 full-time positions once the wind farm becomes operational.
Victorian Planning Minister Sonya Kilkenny emphasized that the government is "making good decisions faster" to provide Victorians with cheaper energy while still protecting the local environment. The project's approval comes despite some concerns over its potential impact on the critically endangered southern bent-wing bat, but the government believes the risks can be effectively managed.
