In South Waziristan, a significant bust occurred on Sunday when the wildlife department thwarted an attempt to smuggle 69 demoiselle cranes. The operation took place at the Tanai checkpost in Wana tehsil, Lower South Waziristan district, following directives from the divisional wildlife officer. Officials reported that the cranes were being moved illegally from Zhob, Balochistan, towards Karak in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, passing through Wana.
The driver involved in the illegal transport was arrested at the scene. He is now facing legal action under the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Wildlife and Biodiversity Act, 2015, with charges including multiple provisions of the Act. The wildlife department reiterated its commitment to protecting biodiversity and stated that strict measures would be enforced against any violations.
The confiscated demoiselle cranes have been placed under the care of the wildlife department. Conservation efforts are underway to rehabilitate these birds into secure, natural environments. The department urges community members to report any suspicious activities to aid in preventing future illegal hunting and trafficking of wildlife, ensuring the preservation of natural heritage for future generations.
