Nearly 500 ducks were seized from an illegal animal sanctuary in Anza, Riverside County, due to overcrowding and welfare concerns. Riverside County Department of Animal Services (RCDAS) officials investigated the property after receiving information about the owner's intent to maintain a sanctuary.
Investigations revealed improper husbandry, prompting the removal of the 480 ducks on Tuesday. RCDAS Assistant Director Dr. Kimberly Youngberg stated the department prioritized the safe transport and intake of the animals to find placement quickly.
Following examinations by RCDAS and the California Department of Food & Agriculture, no disease was detected. However, tests indicated inadequate care, including potential vitamin A deficiency, which can compromise health. The ducks were moved to the San Jacinto Valley Animal Campus.
Adoption for the ducks began on Wednesday morning at the San Jacinto Valley Animal Campus. RCDAS is inviting individuals and nonprofit rescue groups to adopt, waiving all adoption fees. Prospective adopters are advised to verify local waterfowl regulations.
