Caspian Dead Seals Surge to 300
14 May
Summary
- Around 300 dead seals discovered on Kazakhstan's Caspian coast.
- Mass deaths are primarily linked to ecosystem changes.
- Previous incidents in autumn 2025 were blamed on infectious diseases.

Approximately 300 dead seals have been discovered along the Caspian Sea coast in Kazakhstan since April 17, 2026. This grim tally is expected to be significantly higher, as some areas are inaccessible by vehicle. The mass deaths are primarily attributed to changes within the marine ecosystem, according to an environmentalist.
Reports of these findings are being forwarded to relevant authorities for proper carcass disposal. In the autumn of 2025, dead seals, a species listed in Kazakhstan's Red Book, were also found on the coast. At that time, infectious diseases were considered the likely cause.
Cases of seal deaths have also been recorded on the Russian coast of the Caspian Sea. The Caspian seal is an endemic species, meaning it is found only in this body of water, and its population health is an indicator of the marine ecosystem's condition.
