Thirty lions and tigers are being relocated from the former Luján Zoo in Argentina to sanctuaries in South Africa and the United States. This significant transfer, described as one of the largest of its kind globally, aims to significantly improve the lives of these big cats. The animals are moving to Lionsrock in South Africa and The Wild Animal Sanctuary in Colorado.
The Luján Zoo, previously known for allowing public interaction with big cats, was closed in 2020 over safety and welfare issues. By the time Four Paws, the animal welfare organization, took over in 2023, the number of big cats had fallen from 200 to 62. Many suffered from severe health problems including obesity, muscle loss, dental issues, and injuries due to neglect and overcrowding.
