Urban Wetland Thrives: 151 Bird Species Found
29 Jun
Summary
- Sengulam tank in Coimbatore supports 151 bird species.
- Threats include pollution, invasive species, and habitat disturbance.
- The wetland serves as a critical river-link barrage.

A comprehensive study of Sengulam tank, an urban wetland in Coimbatore, has documented an impressive 151 bird species. Researchers recorded a diverse range of avian life, including resident, winter, and local migrants, highlighting the ecosystem's resilience amid significant anthropogenic pressures. This finding underscores the importance of urban wetlands as crucial habitats.
The wetland, however, faces numerous threats, including untreated sewage, garbage dumping, and invasive water hyacinth. Infrastructure development, such as road construction and bund modification, has further fragmented habitats and destroyed nesting sites, impacting species like Pied Kingfishers. Streetlight installation also poses a risk to nocturnal processes.
Despite these challenges, Sengulam tank serves a critical hydrological function as a rare river-link barrage, connecting the Noyyal river to the Kumittipathi river. The study emphasizes the need to maintain natural features like trees and earthen banks to support specialized species and preserve the ecological integrity of this vital urban ecosystem.
