Green Belt Land Approved for 107 Homes Despite Objections
27 Nov
Summary
- Council approved 107 homes and a traveller pitch on former green belt land.
- Over 300 objections cited concerns about infrastructure and services.
- Developer plans a mix of affordable and private homes on the site.

Plans for the construction of up to 107 homes and a traveller pitch on land previously designated as green belt in Merstham have received approval from the Reigate and Banstead Borough Council's planning committee. This decision follows significant opposition, with more than 300 letters of objection submitted by concerned residents. The proposal involves demolishing existing buildings at Oakley Farm to make way for the new development.
Objectors voiced strong concerns that the proposed housing increase would overwhelm local infrastructure, including roads, schools, and healthcare services. Councillor Michael Blacker specifically highlighted that the local GP surgery would be insufficient to support the influx of new residents. The developer, Taylor Wimpey UK, stated that 23 homes would be designated for social rental and an additional 15 for affordable sale.
The site in question was reportedly removed from the green belt and allocated for housing in 2019. The developer has committed to providing further details regarding the layout and specifications of the homes within the next three years. The restoration of stables on the site for office use is also part of the approved plan, aiming to balance development with the preservation of existing structures.
