Wooten Elementary School in North Austin officially opened its doors on Friday, celebrated as the first fully modernized campus funded by a 2022 bond initiative for the Austin Independent School District. This marks a significant step forward for the district's infrastructure improvement plans.
The new facility replaces the previous 70-year-old Wooten Elementary, which was plagued by issues such as leaking roofs. The modernized campus boasts contemporary amenities including an audio/visual system, a library, a playground, and innovative classroom seating, enhancing the learning environment for students.
This opening is the first of 25 AISD schools scheduled for modernization. Despite the district facing a multi-million dollar deficit and having to close multiple campuses, the bond funds are being utilized for these significant upgrades, with Travis Early College High School expected to be the final modernized campus by late 2028.
