A student's academic achievement was overshadowed by accessibility challenges at Bhubaneswar's BJB Higher Secondary School. Prateek Dash, a student who uses a wheelchair and has Duchenne muscular dystrophy, scored 76% in his Class X exams. Despite this success, his family had to carry him and his wheelchair onto the campus because the designated ramp for persons with disabilities was unusable, overgrown with weeds and bushes.
Dash had studied from home after Class V due to his condition but aimed for higher education. School officials were supportive during admission formalities, assisting with his thumb impression for documents. However, the joy of admission quickly turned to distress upon discovering the neglected ramp on his first day.
In response to the incident, BJB Higher Secondary School principal Diptimayee Panda stated that immediate steps would be taken. She assured that the ramp would be cleared on priority and that an additional ramp would be constructed to enhance campus accessibility for all students.
