19 May
Summary
- Over 42,000 students participated in RNLI water safety lessons.
- Sessions taught children to spot dangers and call for help.
- RNLI advises 'float to live' for open water emergencies.

Thousands of children in south-west England participated in essential water safety lessons over seven weeks. The RNLI's Water Smart education sessions reached more than 42,000 students in 336 schools across Devon, Dorset, and Cornwall.
These crucial training sessions focused on teaching young people how to recognize dangers near the sea and how to seek assistance during emergencies. This proactive education is a cornerstone of the RNLI's efforts to prevent water-related accidents.
As summer approaches, the RNLI will increase its lifeguard presence to 59 beaches in the region. The charity strongly advises swimmers in the sea or other open waters to be familiar with the 'float to live' method, a technique to help conserve energy and breathing if in distress.
