An 18-year-old visually impaired student from Beed, Syeda Musfira Fatema Rafiuddin, has secured an MBBS seat at Govt Medical College, Sangli-Miraj, following a legal intervention by the Bombay High Court. Initially deemed unfit for medical education by a medical board on August 10, her diagnosis of congenital low vision was cited as the reason.
Challenging the board's decision, Musfira's counsel successfully argued before the Bombay High Court that a functional assessment was necessary. Relying on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, the court directed an urgent reassessment. This appellate assessment, conducted on September 25, found her eligible and competent to pursue medical education.
Despite a subsequent technical issue with the counselling portal, the high court facilitated her participation in the admission process. Musfira was ultimately allotted an MBBS seat, and her petition was disposed of as infructuous on October 1, marking a significant victory for disability rights in education.
