Vatican Envoy to Speak at Boston College

Archbishop Paul Gallagher, a native of Liverpool, England, and the first English speaker to hold the position of Secretary for Relations with States and International Organizations, is set to address Boston College's graduating class. His address will be part of the university's 150th commencement exercises on May 18. Gallagher was appointed to his Vatican role in 2015 and is known for advocating for humanitarian alternatives to war, emphasizing justice and dialogue. He has previously spoken about the importance of keeping paths to peace open amidst global conflicts and divisions.

During the ceremony, Boston College President Rev. William P. Leahy will present Gallagher with an honorary Doctor of Laws degree. Five other distinguished individuals will also receive honorary degrees, including Glori Alvarez, Joyce M. and William S. Cummings, Sister Jeanette Gaudet, and Mathias Kiwanuka. This commencement marks Rev. Leahy's final graduation ceremony after a 30-year tenure, making him the longest-serving president in the college's history. Gallagher's extensive diplomatic career includes postings in Tanzania, Uruguay, and the Philippines, and he was recently appointed a Knight Commander of the Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George.
