25 Mar
Summary
- UPEI's new medical program is receiving positive feedback from its dean.
- First 20 students show enthusiasm for family medicine despite system turmoil.
- The program is a regional partner with Memorial University of Newfoundland.
The University of Prince Edward Island's medical program, launched six months ago, is progressing "wonderfully," according to Dean Dr. Preston Smith. The inaugural cohort of 20 students has demonstrated significant enthusiasm for their studies, with many expressing interest in family medicine.
Despite turmoil within P.E.I.'s health-care system, including doctor retention issues, the students' excitement remains high. Dr. Smith acknowledged that the reliance on Island physicians for teaching has caused some concern due to doctors leaving or closing practices. However, he expressed confidence in the program's future and its smooth operation.
The UPEI Faculty of Medicine serves as the regional campus for Memorial University of Newfoundland's doctor of medicine program. This collaboration allows students to access lectures from both universities. The program boasts a new clinical learning and simulation centre, equipped with advanced tools for practical skill development.
Students completing the program will be fully trained doctors in six years, including a two-year residency. UPEI anticipates a joint medical degree with Memorial by 2029. The admissions process for the next cohort of 20 students is already underway, with letters expected before the end of spring.
