Union Authorizes School Bus Strike in Anne Arundel County as Students Return to Class
25 Aug
Summary
- Union representing 8,000 workers votes to authorize strike
- Dispute centers on fair pay and respect for school bus drivers
- Strike could disrupt transportation for over 7,000 students

On August 26, 2025, as students in Anne Arundel County, Maryland returned to the classroom, the union representing some school bus drivers in the area voted to authorize a strike. The UFCW MCGEO Local 1994 union, which represents a total of 8,000 workers in the state, says the latest contract proposal from the management company Student Transportation of America (STA) "fails to address core issues around fair pay and respect on the job."
The union is waiting for STA to provide a counter-offer or resolution before deciding when the strike will begin. According to the Anne Arundel County Public Schools Superintendent, a strike would leave dozens of bus routes uncovered, leaving students with no way to get to and from school. The superintendent has emphasized that students should not be "pawns in a negotiating game."
STA, which operates the Annapolis Bus Company (ABC) and Re Wilson that employ the drivers, says it is communicating with the union and the school district to resolve the matter quickly. The company remains hopeful a resolution can be reached to continue providing safe and reliable transportation services to students in the area.
