UMass Chan Faces Financial Storm Under New Leader

UMass Chan Medical School is entering a new era under the leadership of its latest chancellor, who is set to guide the institution through considerable financial challenges and a transforming healthcare sector. The school faced severe repercussions in 2025 due to substantial federal research funding cuts. These reductions led to the furlough of 200 employees, the withdrawal of admission offers for PhD candidates, and a halt in need-based financial aid for the current academic year.

The new leader, a distinguished alumnus and a recognized pioneer in digital health and artificial intelligence, assumes the role with a vision for the future. He graduated from UMass Chan in 2002 and brings extensive experience in both clinical practice and research. His appointment follows an extensive selection process that considered over 100 candidates.

This transition occurs as the previous chancellor, the longest-serving in UMass history, prepares for his planned departure in 2026. During his tenure since 2007, he successfully raised over $865 million and significantly grew the medical school's endowment from $94 million to $640 million by fiscal year 2024.
