Summary
- Ulster University plans up to 450 staff redundancies.
- Campus expansion remains a ministerial priority for growth.
- Future capital requirements focus on infrastructure development.

Ulster University has announced potential redundancies for up to 450 staff, with voluntary measures preferred but compulsory redundancies not ruled out. This news has raised concerns about the planned expansion of the university's Magee Campus in Londonderry, a project viewed as crucial for regional economic growth and a key commitment under the New Decade, New Approach agreement.
Despite the job cut announcement, Stephen Kelly, chairman of the taskforce for the campus expansion, stated that the project remains on track. He explained that the current expansion phase primarily involves capital development, such as integrated design and infrastructure procurement, rather than immediate student number growth. This focus, he believes, shields the expansion plans from significant jeopardy related to the staff redundancies.
The Department for the Economy affirmed that the Magee expansion is a "clear ministerial priority," noting a 22% increase in student numbers over the past two years and confirmed funding secured to date. The university, however, highlighted that a sustainable funding model is a prerequisite for growth, stating that such a model is not yet in place and that expanding on an unsustainable financial basis is not viable.
