Summary
- Celebrities back campaign for primary school cooking lessons.
- Regular practical cookery is infrequent since facilities removed.
- Three-quarters of primary pupils lack regular cookery lessons.

Celebrated figures from the culinary and entertainment world, including Dame Prue Leith, Delia Smith, and Stanley Tucci, are actively campaigning for the reintroduction of regular cooking lessons in UK primary schools. They are presenting their case in Parliament, emphasizing that practical cookery education from the age of four significantly enhances children's life skills, understanding of nutrition, and ability to prepare healthy meals from scratch.
Leith, founder of Leiths cooking school, highlighted that practical skills build confidence and curiosity, encouraging children to cook at home. Delia Smith, a veteran cookery writer, stressed that early instruction removes the fear of cooking and fosters self-sufficiency. Stanley Tucci lamented that children leaving school without basic cooking abilities represents a failure in the education system, depriving them of essential life skills and joys.
Research indicates that 75% of primary pupils do not receive consistent cookery lessons, despite governmental guidance linking homemade meals to positive health outcomes. A government spokesperson stated that healthy eating is integrated into science, design, and RSHE curricula, alongside initiatives like free school meals for eligible families and breakfast clubs.
