2 Apr
Summary
- Over £15 million paid to UK school staff for various claims.
- Teacher injured by rat infestation received six-figure settlement.
- Another staff member won six figures after being attacked with a toaster.

A significant sum of almost £15.5 million was awarded to UK school staff last year in compensation for various employment-related issues. These successful claims covered unfair dismissal, redundancy, discrimination, personal injury, and health and safety failures, as revealed by the NASUWT union. Among the recipients was a teacher who became seriously ill due to a rat infestation, resulting in a six-figure out-of-court settlement for symptoms including chronic fatigue and dizziness. Another staff member was awarded a six-figure sum after suffering injuries requiring surgery and psychiatric support following an assault by a pupil. This included being hit with a toaster and chair, and subsequently assaulted further. A teacher who became disabled after a whiteboard fell on them also received a five-figure settlement after being denied access to appropriate facilities and reassigned to a less senior role. The union's general secretary emphasized that such legal actions are necessitated by employers failing to uphold their duty of care. Many staff members experience prolonged mental distress and anxiety, with some unable to return to teaching due to physical or psychological impacts. Separately, the National Education Union (NEU) discussed a motion for a national campaign against violence in schools, with delegates sharing experiences of physical assaults, threats, and disruptive behaviour impacting education. The NEU highlighted challenges in meeting pupils' needs, mental health issues, and a lack of adequate staffing and specialist support, which exacerbates behavioural problems and hinders early intervention.
