Exam Frustration Mounts: UGC NET Retake Stuns Thousands
17 Aug
Summary
- UGC NET exams cancelled due to factual and translation errors.
- Thousands of students face retests with admissions and careers at risk.
- Candidates express frustration over NTA's delayed response and exam flaws.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) in India has cancelled three papers for the UGC NET exam—English, Commerce, and Sociology—after a review committee identified numerous factual, typographical, and translation errors. This means that thousands of students will have to retake these exams, with the new dates set for September 9 and 10. The situation has created significant anxiety for students, as their admissions, fellowship applications, and academic careers hang in the balance.
Candidates have reported that the NTA took over 45 days to acknowledge the widespread issues, only doing so after sustained pressure from aspirants. Many students, like Dayita Samanta, have noted a high number of repeated questions from previous papers, raising concerns about the integrity of the original exam. The logistical challenges of retaking the exam, including travel and accommodation, are adding to the stress, especially for those who have already made arrangements based on the initial exam schedule.
The disruption extends beyond individual exam scores, affecting the entire academic admission cycle. Central universities like JNU and DU typically begin PhD admissions after the June NET results. With results now expected in October at the earliest, the admission process is likely to be delayed, potentially causing some students to lose an entire academic year if they miss the single annual admission cycle for certain departments.
Adding to the pressure, some students are facing personal health challenges and family pressures, making the prospect of retaking the exam even more daunting. For many, a PhD is a crucial step to delay marriage or fulfill family expectations, making the uncertainty surrounding the UGC NET results a significant personal ordeal. The prolonged uncertainty has worn many down, with some contemplating abandoning their pursuit of a JRF position altogether.
