Eighteen first-generation tribal students from the remote interiors of Gadchiroli and Chandrapur recently visited the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Nagpur, gaining an inspiring perspective on higher education. These students, belonging to the Gond, Madia, and Kolam tribal communities, included six women poised to be the first graduates in their families.
During their visit, the students explored IIM Nagpur's campus, smart classrooms, and library, an environment many described as a dream. A significant highlight was an interactive session with IIM Nagpur Director Bhimaraya Metri. He recounted his own path from a small village to leading a top management institute, urging students not to let their background become an educational barrier.
Metri stressed the importance of hard work, which he noted naturally evolves into smart work when yielding results. Professor Shailendra Nigam further addressed the students, detailing IIM Nagpur's academic programs and admission process. He aimed to alleviate concerns about financial constraints, explaining that IIMs provide merit and need-based financial aid, scholarships, and access to education loans, ensuring economic status does not impede talented individuals.
The visit left a profound impact, bolstering the students' determination to pursue higher education. They felt motivated by the stories of overcoming rural hardships, believing that with the opportunities available today, they too can aspire to study at prestigious institutions and make their communities proud.
