Trailblazing Educator Appointed Interim State Superintendent in Michigan
10 Sep
Summary
- Sue Carnell named interim state superintendent, first Black woman in the role
- Carnell previously served as chief deputy superintendent and in various education leadership positions
- Contract negotiations ongoing for Dearborn superintendent Glenn Maleyko, set to become next state superintendent

In a historic move, Sue Carnell has been named the interim state superintendent of Michigan, becoming the first Black woman to take on this role. Carnell, who previously served as the chief deputy superintendent, will fulfill the position following the retirement of state Superintendent Michael Rice on October 3.
Carnell's appointment comes as the state continues its search for a permanent successor. Last month, Dearborn Public Schools Superintendent Glenn Maleyko was named as the next state superintendent, but his start date has not yet been determined as contract negotiations are still ongoing.
"I am honored to step into the role of interim state superintendent at the Michigan Department of Education," Carnell said in a statement. "I am grateful for the trust and support of the State Board of Education during this transition and look forward to supporting the staff at MDE as we work with our education partners, the governor's office, legislators, and families to continue the momentum of improving outcomes for children."
Carnell brings a wealth of experience to the position, having previously served as the superintendent of the Westwood Community School District in Dearborn Heights, as well as deputy superintendent of the Detroit Public Schools Community District, and assistant director of special education and principal in the Southgate Community School District. She has also held roles within the Michigan Department of Education, including chief of staff for Rice and director of the Office of School Excellence and Office of Community Services.
