Summary
- Colleges can collect tuition fees directly from students starting 2026-27.
- The court suspended government orders barring fee collection from eligible students.
- State owes approximately 1,500 crore in pending reimbursements to colleges.

The Telangana High Court has permitted colleges to collect tuition fees directly from students starting from the 2026-27 academic year. This decision provides interim relief to numerous educational institutions that have been facing significant financial difficulties. The court's order applies to students covered under the state's fee reimbursement scheme, including those from SC, ST, BC, minority, and economically backward classes.
Justice Juvvadi Sridevi suspended the restrictive provisions of existing government orders that barred fee collection from these students. This measure aims to alleviate the financial strain caused by pending reimbursements from the state government. Petitioners highlighted that the state owes approximately 1,500 crore under various scholarship schemes, impacting the institutions' ability to meet operational costs.
The state government cited budget sessions as a reason for the delay in payments. However, the court noted the prolonged delay and the lack of a clear timeline for fund disbursement. The matter is scheduled for further hearing on April 30, with the state directed to submit its official stance on clearing the arrears. The court also stipulated that if the petitions are ultimately dismissed, colleges must refund any fees collected directly from students.
