A Selma High School senior-to-be is actively preparing for a career in emergency services during her summer break. Nevaeh Sandoval-Avila is participating in a unique two-week internship with the Selma Fire Department, gaining practical skills and insights into the life of a first responder.
Her preparation began in a specialized Urban Rural Fire class, where she learned crucial medical response techniques. The internship itself is structured into two distinct parts, with one week spent on an ambulance and the other on a fire engine. Sandoval-Avila has been able to engage directly in training exercises, working alongside probationary firefighters.
This hands-on experience has significantly clarified Sandoval-Avila's future aspirations. She has found fulfillment in assisting people during emergency calls and managing stressful situations. Following this internship, she plans to attend an all-women's fire camp with Cal Fire, further advancing her path toward becoming a first responder.
