Teachers Union in AI Training Row

The American Federation of Teachers (AFT) has initiated a significant AI training program for educators, but the partnership with AI firms and its funding sources have ignited controversy. The union's National Academy for AI Instruction, aiming to train 400,000 teachers over five years, receives $23 million entirely from Microsoft, OpenAI, and Anthropic.

Critics, like author Audrey Watters, express concern that this collaboration grants excessive power to tech companies and potentially compromises educational goals. Conversely, AFT president Randi Weingarten asserts the training is a "moral imperative," enabling teachers to navigate AI's growing presence responsibly. She highlighted that external funding was necessary to launch the initiative.

Microsoft, the largest contributor, states its goal is to incorporate educators' needs into AI product development. Despite these efforts, concerns persist about AI's unproven impact on learning outcomes and its potential to undermine critical thinking. The AFT has called for a ban on student-facing AI in elementary schools and is working with tech partners on safety standards, with a potential withdrawal of funding if promises are not met.
