Khadijat Magomedova, a 45-year-old teacher in Russia's Dagestan region, has dedicated nine years to a challenging daily commute. Every day, she walks 14 kilometers through rugged mountain terrain to reach the Khonok Primary School, where she is both the director and the sole educator for just three students.
Her journey, which takes approximately four hours round trip, involves descending one mountain and climbing another, often at an altitude of 1,800 meters. The path is steep and rocky, demanding significant physical effort. Over the years, Magomedova has faced natural hazards, including an encounter with a wolf and a rockfall, underscoring the dangers of her commute.
Magomedova teaches all subjects to the school's two boys and one girl, who study in the same classroom. Her story gained national attention after a video documenting her commute circulated online. In response, local residents have proposed organizing a fundraiser to help her acquire a car or a horse, aiming to simplify her difficult daily journey to the remote school.
