A former physical education teacher has transitioned into a nursing career through an innovative apprenticeship program. Taibar Akhtar, now a nursing associate apprentice, described the opportunity as "fabulous" for hands-on learning.
The apprenticeship, delivered with the University of Lancashire and Blackburn College, utilizes a training facility equipped with high-fidelity mannequins. These advanced, expensive mannequins, costing up to £35,000 each, can realistically simulate diverse symptoms such as breathing difficulties and cardiac arrests.
Students dedicate four days weekly to placements, primarily at Blackburn Royal Hospital, and one day to academic study at Blackburn College. This blend of practical experience and theoretical learning prepares them for the complexities of nursing, emphasizing the need for care and empathy.
Taibar highlighted that this route offers accessible healthcare training for individuals who might not pursue the traditional university path. The immersive training environment, including working with lifelike mannequins, allows students to practice critical interventions and decision-making in a safe setting.
