Starting January 2027, Tamil Nadu's 181 government arts and science colleges will introduce a new "One Degree, Six Skills" program. This initiative aims to equip undergraduates with practical competencies alongside their academic degrees. Students will learn one employment-oriented skill each semester, accumulating six skills by graduation.
The skill courses, developed with TANSCHE, will not require conventional written examinations. Instead, assessment will be based on skill exercises, individual competency, and a final demonstrable output, focusing on practical application. Colleges are tasked with selecting 20 identified skill courses and appointing trainers, with each course requiring 30-45 hours of instruction.
Furthermore, colleges must establish Memoranda of Understanding with at least three industries. This collaboration aims to bridge the gap between classroom learning and workplace demands, offering students internships and placements. This significant undertaking will impact approximately 96,477 students admitted for the 2026-27 academic year.
