- Total government medical college seats reach 5,200.
- NMC approval follows infrastructure improvements.

Tamil Nadu has successfully secured an increase of 150 MBBS seats in its government medical colleges for the upcoming 2026-27 academic year. The National Medical Commission (NMC) has granted this approval following sustained efforts by the state government to meet the required standards.
Health Minister K G Arunraj announced that the state government previously received approval for 50 additional seats, which has now been elevated to 150. This enhancement was made possible by addressing infrastructure requirements and other deficiencies identified by NMC inspection teams. Consequently, Tamil Nadu will now offer a total of 5,200 MBBS seats across 36 government medical colleges.
The Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DME&R) has been directed to include these additional 150 seats in the seat matrix for the 2026-27 admissions. The revised matrix will be published upon receiving final approval from the NMC. This development underscores the state's commitment to strengthening medical education and expanding opportunities for aspiring doctors.
