Sydney Schools Share Principals Amid Funding Cuts

Catholic primary schools across Sydney's northern areas are set to share principals due to substantial funding cuts. The Diocese of Broken Bay has informed parents that numerous principals will oversee two schools, a strategy intended to foster collaboration and ensure a meaningful presence in each institution while keeping fees manageable.

This leadership model affects approximately 14 smaller primary schools, stretching from Manly to Avalon and extending north to Berowra. Diocese of Broken Bay director of schools, Danny Casey, explained that this approach redirects investment towards student learning rather than administrative overhead. The cuts stem from funding rules introduced five years ago that consider parents' taxable income, resulting in an annual $90 million reduction in funding for the diocese.

While the diocese asserts this model has proven successful elsewhere and aims to maintain each school's unique identity with strong on-site teams, unions and some parents have raised concerns. The Independent Education Union of Australia NSW/ACT branch secretary, Carol Matthews, criticized the move, stating it effectively leaves schools with "part-time" leaders without adequate consultation regarding staffing implications. Parents are seeking greater transparency and meaningful engagement regarding these significant changes.
