12 Aug
Summary
- Four resident doctors face charges in a student's suicide.
- The deceased student died by suicide in his government hostel.
- Allegations include harassment and illegal confinement of students.

A case has been registered against four resident doctors at Surat's Government Medical College (GMC) concerning the alleged ragging of a first-year student, Harsh Pandya. Pandya was found dead by suicide in his hostel room on August 9. The four accused second-year PG students were suspended for six months after the institute's anti-ragging committee implicated them in harassing ten first-year students.
The FIR cites charges including wrongful confinement and intentional insult. Despite regulations prohibiting seniors from assigning tasks to juniors, the accused allegedly subjected ten first-year residents to humiliation, verbal abuse, and false complaints. An incident on August 5 involved detaining students in a serology lab for two hours of continuous mental harassment.
A high-level committee is also reviewing faculty involvement, issuing show-cause notices to the head of the microbiology department and three other faculty members. The anti-ragging committee's findings indicated no evidence of physical abuse leading to the death.
