Students at Old Rochester Regional Junior High School have collaborated with composer Kevin Krumenauer to create a new musical composition, "Celestial Sway." This initiative was made possible by a $3,000 grant from the Old Rochester Regional Tri-Town Education Foundation.
The project engaged over 200 student musicians in grades 5 through 8 through virtual sessions. Music teacher Richard Laprise highlighted the students' strong sense of ownership over the piece, noting it was their favorite of the year.
"Celestial Sway" has been incorporated into the district's permanent music library, ensuring future students will perform it. This project is part of over $9,400 in private grants awarded by the foundation for the 2024-25 school year.
Doreen Lopes, early childhood coordinator, emphasized how the collaboration boosts creativity and pride. Superintendent Michael S. Nelson praised the project for strengthening the Tri-Town communities' cultural and educational identity and their legacy of musical excellence.
