A T-Level placement at Medway Maritime Hospital has set Kelly Ochonogor on an unexpected career path. Initially studying clinical psychology, she discovered her calling as an Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) while observing the surgical team. The collaborative environment and patient focus deeply resonated with her.
Kelly, 21, from Chatham, is undertaking a three-year ODP apprenticeship. This combines academic learning with practical experience, working alongside surgeons and anaesthetists. She previously worked as a clinical support worker for a year to build her clinical expertise.
Reflecting during National Apprenticeship Week, Kelly noted the apprenticeship's role in her personal and professional growth. She aims to complete her apprenticeship in June 2028 as a confident and experienced ODP, with aspirations for specialization or further study.
