Preschool Shut Down: Safety Concerns Spark Chaos

A St. Petersburg preschool, Learning Adventures, experienced an abrupt closure this week, leaving parents and former staff in distress. The new owner, Denice Aviles, stated the shutdown was a necessary measure due to severe safety and cleanliness concerns within the facility. These issues included lifting floorboards, pest infestations, potential mold, and non-functioning windows.

Upon closure, families and former employees returned to collect personal items and children's records, but were initially denied access. Tensions escalated, requiring law enforcement intervention to supervise the retrieval of belongings. Former director Sheila Brightman and parent Karly Meyers expressed frustration over the lack of notice and childcare options, especially with a holiday weekend approaching.

Aviles confirmed that extensive renovations are already underway and are anticipated to last approximately one month. While former staff will not be rehired, the owner indicated that families and their children will be able to return once the facility meets safety standards.
