A team of nine students from Bodmin College, each with special educational needs, has successfully navigated the challenging 7.8-mile Jubilee Challenge on Dartmoor. This expedition is specifically tailored for young people facing physical and educational barriers, offering them a significant accomplishment.
The Dartmoor Preservation Society played a crucial role in enabling the students' participation by providing a £2,080 grant. This vital funding was used to purchase appropriate clothing and shoes, costs that would have otherwise prevented the school from taking part.
Jen George, head of adventure and outdoor learning at Bodmin College, described the event as a highlight of the year for many students. She noted that even the start of the event can be intimidating, especially for students with conditions like partial blindness or autism. Alfred, participating for the third time, shared his personal experience with managing anxiety related to his autism, expressing how knowing what to expect helped him avoid feeling overwhelmed.
George emphasized the critical importance of the donated equipment, stating that the school would not be able to participate without the generous support of the Dartmoor Preservation Society. The Jubilee Challenge is often the largest event these students have ever undertaken, instilling a deep sense of pride and accomplishment. Orchard Manor School, another special school in Devon, also benefited from the society's funding, ensuring all their students could participate regardless of their ability to afford necessary gear.
