Gwinnett Teacher's Sneaker Squad Doubles Attendance

An innovative program at Gwinnett Intervention Education Center East is transforming student attendance. Dr. Candice Richardson, a former medical doctor turned educator, introduced the Sneaker Spirit Squad to combat chronic absenteeism.

This initiative rewards students with perfect weekly attendance by allowing them to trade their uniform shoes for vibrant sneakers the following week. This simple yet effective incentive has nearly doubled attendance rates. Students credit the program with boosting their motivation, confidence, and sense of self-worth.

Richardson's holistic approach, informed by her medical background, focuses on students' mental, physical, and spiritual well-being. She ensures all students can participate, even purchasing sneakers for families who cannot afford them. Her dedication was recognized when she was named Teacher of the Year by the Gwinnett County School District.
