Old Signal Box Becomes New Classroom
11 Jul
Summary
- An old signal box transformed into a science learning center.
- It teaches children about railways and Morecambe Bay's ecology.
- Over 50 local schools will use the new educational space.

A historic signal box in Hest Bank, Lancashire, has been repurposed into an innovative STEM education center. Originally built by British Railways and opened in December 1968, the London Midland Type 15 box now serves as a unique classroom for local schoolchildren.
The transformed space offers pupils the opportunity to learn about railway operations, with a display showcasing live train movements. It also focuses on the ecology of the adjacent Morecambe Bay, providing an immersive learning experience. This initiative aims to connect children with both industrial heritage and natural science.
Throughout the academic year, the center is set to welcome groups from more than 50 local schools. Educators believe this hands-on approach, set in a real-world environment, significantly enhances the learning process by bringing theoretical concepts to life.
