Parents Fund School Library Dream: £15k Raised!

A new school library has been established at West Bretton Junior & Infant School, near Wakefield, thanks to a remarkable fundraising effort by parents. They collectively raised almost £15,000 to transform a former IT classroom into a welcoming space now stocked with over 500 books. This initiative addresses the lack of dedicated library facilities in many primary schools across England. The new library offers a significant improvement from the previous situation where books were kept in a corridor. Children have expressed excitement about the new facility, highlighting its decorative nature and comfortable reading areas. The project was officially opened by local book illustrator Liz Kaye. Parent and teacher association members emphasized that the smiles and enthusiasm of the children made all the fundraising efforts worthwhile. The library is anticipated to foster a love for reading and provide a shared activity for families.

The opening of the library aligns with a national pledge to ensure every primary school in England has a library by 2029. Fundraising activities, including school discos, cake sales, raffles, and family fun days, demonstrated strong community involvement. Headteacher Ellen Firth expressed immense pride in the school community's achievement. Pupils shared their positive experiences, noting the abundance of books available compared to their home collections and appreciating the inviting atmosphere of the new library.
