A poignant new school garden has been established at St Mary's Church of England Primary School in Writhlington, near Radstock. This serene space was created in memory of Elias, a five-year-old pupil who tragically passed away from a brain tumour last year. The school community organized numerous fundraising events over the past year to gather the necessary funds for its development.
The garden is designed as a place for pupils and staff to remember Elias, but also serves as a broader space for children to reflect on family members they have lost. It includes trees, plants, flower beds, and a distinctive wooden train, with parents and grandparents dedicating their time to its upkeep. Elias's father expressed gratitude, noting the community's support during their most difficult time.
Head teacher Cathie Lampert stated the garden fulfills a need for a quiet space for collective remembrance and reflection. Elias's sister, Lola, shared cherished memories, including a Disneyland trip, and believes Elias would have particularly enjoyed the train and a bench bearing his name. Elias was diagnosed with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma, a rare childhood brain tumour, in April 2024 and passed away a year later. His parents have been actively fundraising to keep his memory alive.
