Schools Ban Junk Food: Healthier Meals Ahead!
15 Aug
Summary
- Schools must ban high-fat, high-sugar, high-salt foods.
- Food safety norms and hygiene standards are now mandatory.
- Schools to promote healthy eating via 'Eat Right School' plans.

The state school education department has issued new directives to all schools, including government, aided, and private institutions, enforcing stringent food safety standards and banning high-fat, high-sugar, and high-salt (HFSS) foods from school premises and within 50 meters. These guidelines, based on 2020 regulations and a recent FDA order, aim to protect students' health.
Schools are now responsible for ensuring canteens and kitchens offer nutritious options like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, meeting students' dietary needs. Management must verify that all food operators have valid FSSAI licenses and maintain hygiene, proper storage, pest control, and waste management. An 'Eat Right School' plan, including a nutrition policy and awareness sessions, is also required.
The department highlighted that school canteens and mid-day meal systems should serve as models of healthy eating. Furthermore, schools must educate students and parents on the risks of processed foods and their right to safe, nutritious meals, amid intensified FDA inspections of food preparation centers.
