Pune is poised for a significant expansion in medical education and healthcare infrastructure. Starting with the 2027-28 academic year, the city will benefit from an additional 50 MBBS seats. This expansion is a result of the Union health ministry's approval to establish a new medical college at the Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) Medical College and Hospital located in Bibwewadi.
The approval comes after the proposal was reconsidered twice, with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis playing a crucial role in securing the clearance. He expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister JP Nadda for this development, calling it a 'wonderful Navratri gift to Maharashtra'.
Beyond the new academic seats, the ESIC facility is also developing a substantial 500-bed hospital. Construction for this advanced healthcare facility is anticipated to be finished by the end of December this year. These enhancements are expected to bolster Pune's position as a vital healthcare hub for surrounding districts.
