Summary

Second pre-university examinations are set to begin in the district on Saturday, with a total of 37,337 students scheduled to participate. Data from the Department of Pre-University Education (DPUE) reveals a significant shift in language preferences among students. Registrations for Kannada have seen a decrease, dropping from 21,313 last year to 20,709 this year. In contrast, English continues its upward trend, with registrations climbing from 32,130 to 35,710. Hindi remains the third most chosen language, with 10,712 registrations. Students are required to study two languages, and their choices often depend on the institution. Government college students typically opt for Kannada and English, whereas students in aided and unaided colleges frequently prefer English as their first language, followed by other options like Kannada or Hindi. Officials noted that the PU course offers flexibility, allowing students to choose languages beyond Kannada or English as permitted. In a supportive measure, the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has announced free travel for all second PU students starting Saturday, allowing them to use KSRTC buses by presenting their examination admit cards.
