Panjab University is set to host its 73rd convocation on December 13, ushering in a significant cultural shift by replacing traditional Western ceremonial gowns with vibrant Phulkari jackets. This initiative, continuing a trend from earlier this year, aims to infuse the ceremony with a distinct regional identity, celebrating local heritage.
Students are required to rent these traditional jackets for a nominal fee of Rs 120, along with a Rs 1,000 refundable security deposit. Specific colors are designated for different academic achievements: red jackets for DSc, DLitt, and PhD awardees, and saffron for all undergraduate and postgraduate candidates. These jackets will be available for pickup near the gymnasium hall.
Attendees must adhere to a strict dress code of white or off-white Indian attire. Participation in a mandatory rehearsal on December 12 at 10 am is crucial, as absence will result in disqualification. Strict security measures will be in place, with prohibited items including mobile phones and handbags, reinforcing the university's commitment to a dignified and culturally resonant ceremony.
