Private Colleges Dominate India's MBBS Seats
4 Aug
Summary
- Private medical colleges now hold the majority of MBBS seats.
- Nearly 79% of new MBBS seats were added in private institutions.
- Affordability of medical education is a growing concern.

Private medical colleges now account for the majority of MBBS seats in India for the first time, with 73,643 seats (54%) compared to 63,296 seats (46%) in government colleges for the 2026-27 academic year.
This marks a notable flip from the previous year when government colleges held a slight majority. Of the 9,911 MBBS seats added for 2026-27, a substantial 7,800 (79%) were established in private institutions, while only 2,111 (21%) were added to government colleges.
India now boasts a record 1,36,939 MBBS seats across 823 medical colleges, a significant increase from 51,348 seats in 2014-15. Despite this expansion aimed at addressing doctor shortages, the rising cost of medical education has emerged as a primary concern, as government college fees remain significantly lower than private ones.
