On August 28, 2026, President Droupadi Murmu celebrated Raksha Bandhan with students from across India at Rashtrapati Bhavan. She encouraged the young attendees to apply the festival's inherent values of love, care, and protection towards safeguarding the environment.
President Murmu expressed concern over the degrading ecological balance and proposed that students tie rakhis on plants and trees. This symbolic act, she suggested, would help maintain the equilibrium essential for survival and demonstrate a commitment to environmental preservation.
The special celebration saw the participation of 122 individuals, comprising 89 students and 32 teachers. Among them were 13 Children with Special Needs, representing 17 states and one Union Territory, along with students from Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan and Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti.
During their visit to the national capital, the students engaged in various educational and cultural activities. They visited the Pradhan Mantri Sangrahalaya on August 27, 2026, and following the Rakhi ceremony, enjoyed a guided tour of Rashtrapati Bhavan and Amrit Udyan.
Further enriching their experience, the students also viewed the sacred Buddha relics at "The Light and the Lotus: Relics of the Awakened One" exhibition at the Raipithora Cultural Complex. Their itinerary also included visits to the National War Memorial and the National Science Centre on August 29, 2026, as part of a broader 'Delhi Darshan' initiative.
