12 Jul
Summary
- Record temperatures make learning environment difficult for children.
- Children overheat faster than adults and lack self-awareness.
- Community fundraiser launched for essential air conditioning.

The significant impact of rising summer temperatures on young children's well-being and educational engagement can no longer be overlooked. Elaine Kilner, with 26 years at Sunnyside Preschool Playgroup, reports that current record heatwaves are making it extremely challenging to maintain a conducive learning atmosphere. Children, who heat up four times faster than adults and are less aware of their overheating, struggle with concentration and exhibit increased fatigue.
Kilner described the preschool's mobile classroom as feeling like a greenhouse due to its construction materials, exacerbating the heat's effects. To address this issue, a community fundraiser has been launched to acquire air-conditioning units. This initiative aims to improve conditions for both the children and the staff, ensuring a better learning and working environment.
