The Indian government is seeking industry leadership in reshaping the nation's skilling landscape through the significant ₹60,000 crore PM-SETU initiative. This program is designed to drive India's energy and industrial transformation by enhancing vocational training quality and relevance.
Under the Pradhan Mantri Skilling and Employability Transformation through Upgraded ITIs (PM-SETU) scheme, industry partners will now hold a controlling 51% stake in Section 8 companies managing ITI clusters. This model places curriculum design, technology adoption, and skill development directly in the hands of industry experts.
Secretary Debashree Mukherjee of the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) emphasized this shift at Bharat Electricity 2026, highlighting the need for a future-ready workforce. She called on industry to become co-creators, actively participating in curriculum development and investing in trainers and infrastructure.
The initiative encourages sector skill councils and industry to become awarding bodies, facilitating faster rollout of relevant courses. The government is also expanding apprenticeships, with co-funding support for MSMEs, to ensure a skilled workforce ready for India's energy transition.
