Panjab University Library's Rare Treasures Need Protection

Panjab University is being urged by the student organisation SAAKHI to bolster the preservation of its Rare Section at the AC Joshi Library. The group has submitted a memorandum outlining a critical need for a structured mechanism to facilitate access for students and researchers. This significant collection encompasses rare books, ancient manuscripts, religious scriptures, historical documents, and linguistic works, including essential Sikh literature and texts like the Ramayana and Mahabharata.

SAAKHI further recommended the engagement of archivists, historians, and subject matter experts to meticulously oversee the preservation, cataloguing, and ongoing maintenance of these irreplaceable items. For specialized content, such as Sikh historical and religious literature, the university could potentially seek assistance from dedicated institutions like the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC). The organisation proposed a transparent system designed to balance rigorous preservation efforts with academic accessibility, ensuring researchers can consult the rare material without compromising its delicate state.
