Oxnard School Ditches Chávez Name for New Identity
26 Aug
Summary
- César Chávez School is now Juanita Academy of Literacy, Communication Arts and Technology.
- The name change follows accusations against labor leader César Chávez.
- The school board unanimously voted to rename the campus on March 25.

The former César Chávez School in Oxnard has been officially renamed Juanita Academy of Literacy, Communication Arts and Technology. The Oxnard School District board of trustees approved the change on August 25th, concluding months of deliberation. This decision followed a March 18th New York Times article detailing accusations of sexual misconduct against labor leader César Chávez by multiple women.
Previously known as César Chávez School, the campus at 301 N. Marquita St. was renamed in 1993. The recent allegations have prompted a broader reassessment of public honors for Chávez. The Ventura County Board of Supervisors changed César Chávez Day to Farmworkers Day, and the Oxnard City Council is considering renaming César Chávez Drive. The school's statue and mural honoring Chávez were removed late last month.
